Birmingham airport opened in 1939. Owned by the city council as a municipal airport it was designed to meet the needs of the local residents and the industry of Birmingham city and the surrounding areas.
The main runway was expanded in 1966 and when the NEC opened in the 70's the airport's popularity increased. In May 1984 Terminal 1 was opened by the Queen giving opportunity for more routes and an increase of passengers using Birmingham Airport.
